5 Ways to Successfully Onboard First Year Teachers to Your School

1) Help them get acclimated by providing a People & Places Guide for your School

2) Build Relationships through Mentorship
Assign a veteran staff member as a mentor to help the new teacher set up their classroom, offering advice on layout, organization, and necessary supplies. This experienced mentor can provide guidance, answer questions, and offer support when needed throughout the year. In addition, encourage them to schedule regular check-ins.

3) Foster an environment of Positive Well-Being and Belonging

Promote a healthy work-life balance by setting realistic expectations and offering flexible scheduling when possible. Encouraging first year teachers (and staff in general) to set work-life boundaries is important in building and maintaining healthy habits both mentally and emotionally. Providing access to mental health resources, including counseling services and stress management workshops are also key ways to foster an environment of positive well-being and belonging.

4) Get them Involved and Celebrate Milestones

One way to make first year teachers truly feel at home is to encourage them to participate in or lead extracurricular activities, fostering connections with both students and colleagues. Staff leads can also proactively involve new teachers in planning and attending school events in a conscious effort to integrate them into the school community.

5) Offer Continuous Professional Development
