Keynote: I Am
What gets in the way of Kindness?
Incompetence: If I don’t know how to do it, I won’t do it.
Insecurity: If I’m scared to do it, I won’t do it.
Inconvenience: If I don’t feel like doing it, I won’t do it.
Inconsistency: If I only do it once in awhile, I don’t build the habit of doing it.
As anxiety increases, empathy decreases. We have to explicitly, more than ever teach the competencies of connection! To keep these engaging at the secondary level, we have to teach social-emotional skills alongside character development
Social-Emotional skills include: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Responsible Decision-Making, Relationship Skills.
Character Skills include: Patience, Kindness, Honesty, Respect, Selflessness, Forgiveness, Humility, Commitment.
CharacterStrong lessons intentionally bring these together by focuses on the soft skills of SEL that support the hard, relational work of character practice.
