Saving Private Ryan

Summary:

Private Ryan was one of four brothers fighting in World War Two. After his other three brothers died, the U.S made it a mission to bring home Ryan. As Captain Miller and his men finally save Ryan, they must fight in one last battle together, where Miller is fatally wounded. Captain Miller gave his life to save Private Ryan’s life – He left a legacy in Ryan’s life when his last words were “Earn this.” Ryan lived each day to not only repay that legacy, but to leave his own.

Legacy is about impacting your community, and those around you in a way that lasts long after your time; make that legacy positive. We are all blessed with people in our life that have made sacrifices to better us, whether it’s a parent, teacher, or friend! It is our job to earn what they have given us and leave a similar legacy.  After that moment with Captain Miller, he spent everyday working to justify the loss Miller made. Legacy is not about leaving an image of you in the world, it is about leaving an impact that others see long after our time.

Debrief:

  • What is “legacy”? What does it mean to live in a way that leaves a positive legacy?
  • How is the legacy Captain Miller left in Ryan’s life similar to the ones people have left in our lives? What makes them alike?
  • What are some positive legacies people have left in your life? What made it so impacting?
  • What can we do, in leadership positions, to leave a legacy? What can we do out of leadership positions to leave one?
